On Saturday 15 December 2007, the 2nd Annual Carols by Candlelight hosted by the St Peter and Paul parish in conjunction with the Mar Narsai Assyrian College was held on the oval at St John’s Park High School.

This traditional event, now in its second year, brought families young and old together for a true celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The night was entirely managed by the committee of the Ss Peter and Paul Church and was a spectacular success showcasing the fine vocal talent of the combined choir.

Ss Peter and Paul Parish priest, Reverend Genard Lazar said the months of preparation and hard work certainly came to fruition on the night.

“When we saw the amazing response by the Assyrian and non-Assyrian communities, we felt humbled and blessed.”

“In what has become a tradition of the parish, we gathered in a circle on top of the hill and prayed. We committed the night to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,” said Father Genard.

There were performances by the St Hurmizds Assyrian Primary School Kindergarten of The Drummer Boy and Azakh Oomrah Jaldeh, along with the Year 4 performance of Make me a Servant and He is the King of Kings.

The threat of rain didn’t deter the crowds. Over one thousand people attended, many bringing their favourite picnic rug, chairs and eskies to enjoy the show. The parish committee had organised many food and entertainment stalls.

The enchanting voices of the choir and the passionate solo performances encouraged the crowds to hold their lit candles high, hug their children and join in with the songs and hymns.

Young and old, the joy on the faces of the crowds was evident. Carols by Candlelight, has become a truly great Australian Christmas Tradition.

The night culminated in a dazzling display of fireworks that captivated the crowds.

“The carols allow families to come along and share in the joy of Christmas,” said Reverend Genard
“Next year’s event promises to be even bigger and better with preparations for the show already underway.”
