Assyrian Church of the East

“For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”
St. Matthew 18:20
On the evening of Wednesday the 14th of February close to 80 faithful sons and daughters of the small Melbourne Parish of the Assyrian Church of the East gathered in the St. George Church located in Reservoir to participate in the Parish’s newly formed program of fortnightly preaching.
Rev. Fr. Genard Lazar, Parish Priest of the Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Sydney lead the evening’s program with what he termed a “review” of the Holy Bible. Rev. Genard discussed at length how relevant and how evidently important the study of the Holy Bible is to every Christian and how it should be a staple of daily life for members of the Church. He took the opportunity to provide a historical overview of the Holy Bible, its composition and how best to approach a regular reading and study of the Bible.
Rev. Genard further progressed in his preaching to discuss the elevated place Bible reading and study holds in Christian life with the reading of both the Old and New Testaments being pivotal in the Christian routine of fasting, prayer and participation in the Holy Qurbana.
The attendants, many of whom are already well versed in the Holy Book, were pleased with the solid and well communicated preaching of the evening and commented that often a review or refresher is required for Christians to regain the perspective needed in Christianity and to renew their understanding that the focus should always unequivocally revolve around our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His divine words.
Rev. Genard thanked the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Korkis Toma and His Grace Bishop Mar Meelis Zaia for allowing him the opportunity to undertake this preaching for the benefit of the beloved sons and daughters of the Holy Church. The participants closed the evening’s program by chanting the hymn of ‘Tis-bokh-ta’ or ‘Praise’ written by one of the preeminent fathers of the Church, Mar Aprim Rabba.
Preaching from the Holy Bible takes place fortnightly at St. George Church with the next preaching to take place on the 28th of February at 7.30pm. St. George Church is located at 8 Broadhurst Avenue, Reservoir. All Welcome
