Theology > Bible Studies > Refining Gold

We know that gold is a highly valued treasure is in this world. When gold comes out of the ground, it comes with impurities and needs to be purified. To purify gold, the refiner has to place the gold in a furnace with a high temperature fire. After a certain degree of heat, the impurities burn away, leaving the pure gold.

In Gods eyes, we are a highly valued treasure. Yet much like the gold dug up from the ground, our characters have been affected by the impurities of the fallen world we live in. Just like the refining of gold, God’s work in our lives is a refining process and some of our experiences feel as though we have been placed in His Holy fire to burn away all our impurities.

God’s purifying process is achieved through trials, discipline and perseverance. Let us look at what God’s word says about trials and perseverance: Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4)

When God disciplines us, he disciplines us as a loving father who has our complete good in mind: Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. (Hebrews 12:7-8)

When gold reaches the purest point, it becomes like a mirror and you can actually see your reflection. The same with God’s work in our lives. He will bring us to a point where He will look at us and see that we love others as Jesus, pray for others as Jesus, care for others as Jesus and remain faithful as Jesus. He will look at His children and see Jesus Christ.

As committed Christians, this refining process has begun for us. Ask our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to comfort you now and always: Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrew 2:18)

But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. (Job 23:10)

God be with you now and always.
